from portfolio zero to product hero (almost)

By

By pure coincidence, all the major changes in my professional life seem to happen around this time of year. Ah, spring! That season of renewal…

It’s been a year since I started freelancing in tech. I’ve been figuring things out as I go — and still am. I experiment, search, learn, improve, adapt, shift directions… sometimes I go in circles, but I keep moving forward!

I built my first portfolio site with Next.js and deployed it with Vercel. I designed my logo on Canva (say what you want, snobby haters, but that tool is seriously complete, practical, accessible, intuitive — and lets you create a professional result in no time). I started coding with ChatGPT after a bit of resistance (no, it doesn’t replace my brain, creativity, critical thinking, or reasoning — but it makes a pretty good assistant). That portfolio zero site mostly served as a way to practice after earning my certification.

Then I decided to rebuild my site using WordPress and refocus my services entirely on Project Management, Agility — especially Scrum — and the Product Side of a Business. Coding? Not really my thing in the end.

Last summer, I helped my sister out with the admin side of her website — a short volunteer assignment in Antananarivo (the capital of Madagascar). That experience gave me the duel satisfaction of lending a hand to my sister and diving into research on how to secure and optimize an e-commerce site built with PrestaShop.

Portfolio 0 + Assignment 0 = Revenue €0.

Despite my efforts, I struggled to attract clients. But that wasn’t the only issue — I was also having a hard time landing a junior position. My most ridiculous idea? Trying to apply Scrum when I was “just” a sales associate (as people liked to remind me) in a shop… CRAZY, right? Anyway! Blending a pay-the-bills job with your “passion” in the same space? Why not. You’ve got to get creative to gain experience…

While traveling in the US, I’ve kept up with my training — mostly self-taught — in Agile, Scrum, and now the Product Side of a Business. I’ve found Uizard way easier to get into than Figma (yes, I’m a beginner — so what?). Same feeling with Canva. Always aiming to showcase my potential and highlight my product skills, I’m currently working on a personal project that will soon have its place on my site. A seasoned PM has also taken me under their wing to work on large-scale projects. The tide is turning, finally!

In a few months, who knows? Maybe I’ll be a barista (still LOL).

For now… Go Product!

Que será, será.

Stay tuned.
